History:
Shun was born February 16th, 2018 in Tokyo, Japan to impoverished parents. His brother, younger by only a few years, took on the responsibility for raising him well before his parents died. It should have been the other way around. Though he never had confirmation, it was suggested that his father was a member of the Yakuza who were responsible for his death. The brothers were extremely close but went in opposite directions. Shun was groomed to join the Yakuza, and did, while Takeshi became a police officer. Assuming he had no other choice, the Yakuza pressured him, Shun worked for them despite his brother's attempts to stop him from doing so.

As an enforcer who did the boss' dirty work, Shun couldn't leave even though he'd wanted to; he never wanted to join in the first place.

Years later, Takeshi approached Shun with a deal. They would both leave. Takeshi would leave behind his career and beloved dog if Shun would go with him to board the Origin ( a spacecraft headed to colonize the planet Thea ). It meant a fresh start for both of them. Shun agreed. The Yakuza didn't allow it and killed Takeshi for Shun's insubordination. Feeling as if he had nothing left to lose, Shun kidnapped the Yakuza boss' father and used him as a lure. He killed his boss. Afterwards, he boarded the Origin and was placed in cryo sleep.

When Shun wakes, it's a week before the Origin is set to arrive on Thea. There's no one around for about an hour and then the few others that were a part of his set of passengers wake up as well. They explore the ship to find that everyone else was evacuated and a piece of an asteroid had punctured a part of the ship. Shun and the others discover bodies near where the asteroid had struck and horrifically, that the bodies were still moving. A survivor tells them that something had boarded the Origin and was affecting people.

To keep it simple, the aliens take over the humans. They try to find a way to see who is affected and who isn't but someone keeps sabotaging their attempts. What started with eight is whittled down quickly. Shun grows close to Lana, a woman who understands him and why he chose to come to Thea. They work together to protect the others and to fight the alien species that is killing the passengers. Soon the Origin gets close enough to Thea to board and a probe docks. The probe is looking for alien lifeforms on the Origin and begins to shut the ship down; this tells them that Siren ( the founders of the Origin ) knew that alien life was possible and that the evacuees were prepared for the Origin to reach the planet.

The group realizes that the only way to leave the Origin and go to Thea is to make sure all the alien lifeforms are dead. This is difficult but they've learned that once the alien affects a human, their memory begins to dissipate. Shun ends up alone in one of the crew member's bunk where he notices a video of the man talking about his younger brother Sam and their vacations to a lakehouse as children. A story that Lana had told him earlier on as if it were her own. He stumbles to grasp what that means and notices a voice recorder tucked under the bed where Lana and him had slept the previous evening.

On it is her voice - reciting the name's of the survivors. Her name. Information that she's forgetting and needs to remember. Lana attacks him and they fight. Shun's heart isn't in it and she takes him down, pointing the gun at his head. Where all the others affected by the alien killed without mercy, Lana is different. She tells Shun that she's sorry and gives him the gun. He knocks her out and places her on the probe, sending it back to the planet. This causes the emergency protocol that the probe had started to end and alerts all the others to the fact that either Shun or Lana were the affected. Lana wakes up on the probe traveling towards the planet and hears a recording of a broadcast from Thea warning them not to come because they weren't safe on the planet.

The season ends with Shun watching Lana go and the others cheering as they believe they're now relatively safe and can finally go to Thea.

Personality:
Shun is pragmatic to the point that it borders on overly stubborn and hardheaded. He sees right through people the moment he meets them. Their positive qualities and the negatives. Their darkness. What makes them weak and vulnerable. He was good at his job and knows exactly how to push the buttons of the people he needs to hurt. He joined the Yakuza because he assumed it was the only life he could have. He was poor without any connections and if he didn't do it, his brother would be forced to. When doing the 'hard' things for the Yakuza he compartmentalized the best that he could so that it didn't affect him very much. Takeshi saw right through him.

As good as he was at his job, he hated it. Hurting people wasn't what he wanted to do but every time he'd tried to stop, the Yakuza punished him. When his brother stepped in to save his life they took his instead. This blow was devastating to Shun. It pushed him to the point where he no longer cared about his own well-being and when he chose to continue on to the Origin, it was to finally have that new life and become better. It was for Takeshi.

Shun is compassionate and caring underneath all the scars and gruff exterior. He doesn't like to hurt people but if it's the only option or the best one, he'll do it. He's very much a one for the many kind of guy. There are times on the Origin where he pulls the trigger because nobody else can. It's his way of making amends, doing right this time around. For Takeshi. Having the past that he does and knowing that no matter how hard he tries, he'll never quite be free of it, Shun attempts to ignore how the others make him feel. He wants their friendship and love. Their respect. Their kindness. He doesn't believe he deserves it but desires it all the same.

He can be violent but it's always controlled. Anger with a tight leash and aggressive actions that can halt midway through. Shun is intelligent and calculating. Careful.

Coming into game, he'll be heartbroken and shaken. He'd trusted someone for the first time in years and they weren't human. He doesn't understand what happened and hates how vulnerable it makes him feel. Shun is trying to be a good man but it's a work in progress.

[ It was two weeks after leaving the Origin, nestled into some little room with a bunk bed on a ship, part of the fleet, that he realized he wasn't going to see his brother again. Sure, the facts were there. Crystal clear. He was gone. But denial was as good as any passing lover. Warm and comforting while they're there, a presence that lingers when they're gone, but the moment it's time to look for someone new, the reality sets in. He wouldn't see Takeshi again. Or Lana. Ever.

Tack on another week before he allows himself to grieve, four more after that and Shun was getting stir crazy. Paranoia sets in. Every face was Yakuza. Every face was that of someone affected. Every quick moment was his last. He's violent and then suffocating, drowing. Emotional when he'd rather fucking not be.

It's not until he's passing someone in dining, who grimaces at him, that he understands his mood is beginning to show. Marsiva has been kind, generous even, but it wasn't a therapist. It was just another ship, one of many, and this one wasn't filled with people trying to kill him.

He has two options. Use what little sanity he has left and finally talk to somebody or continue to waste away in his bunk. They both have an appeal but he chooses the former and sends out a post to all of the Fleet. ]

What's the point of all of this?
Not on a philosophical level.

What is the literal point of being here? What purpose does this serve?
Are we secret guinea pigs?
Watched. Prodded. Observed with amusement.
I don't believe in coincidence or fate.

We're here because we were brought here.
I want off this ship.
Is that going to happen?

[ Shun doesn't expect many answers but something, anything, would help comfort him. Give him a little bit here. ]
